Another view exiting the Gatun Locks. There are three sets in sequence that raise/lower ships about 85 feet to/from the level of Gatun Lake. The lake was formed by damming the Chagres River. At the Pacific end there is the single Pedro Miguel Lock and the double Miraflores Locks that raise/lower ships a total of 85 feet. Contrary to popular belief there is no difference in the sea level between the Atlantic (Caribbean) and the Pacific ends. The difference in water level at various times of the day is the result of the greater variation of the Pacific tides. The Caribbean end has virtually no tide. The greater Pacific tides forced the designers to build the Miraflores lock gates higher and stronger.
